Ian Benjamin

Ian Benjamin has extensive experience guiding and advising nonprofits in transition, most recently as Interim Executive Director at Community Capital New York, Greater Newark Conservancy, Volunteers of Legal Service and Riverdale Neighborhood House.  A CPA based in New York City, Ian retired in 2019 as a partner at RSM where he led the northeast nonprofit audit, tax and consulting practice.  Ian has more than thirty-five years’ experience in the nonprofit community with organizations of all sizes and complexity including those with local, national and international scope.  He has served public charities, social service providers, private foundations, international, membership and cultural groups, colleges and universities, K-12 schools, and trade and professional associations.  Ian also has served for many years in leadership roles on nonprofit boards.  He is past board chair at Nonprofit New York.

Ian began his career with Deloitte in London, England and moved to New York where he was admitted to the partnership in 1989.  At Deloitte Ian served a wide variety of clients including public reporting entities, private companies, nonprofit organizations, and employee benefit plans.  He led nonprofit and employee benefit plan practices at both Deloitte and RSM until 2019.  When he retired from RSM he was national nonprofit audit leader and led the northeast nonprofit audit, tax and consulting practices.

For many years Ian has served as a member of nonprofit boards including Governance Matters and the New York State Society of CPAs; he has chaired the boards of Court Appointed Special Advocates, Stephen Wise Free Synagogue and Nonprofit New York.  Ian chaired the Ethics Enforcement Committee of the AICPA where he now serves as a member of its Joint Trial Board.

Ian is a Chartered Accountant in England and Wales and a CPA in New York, New Jersey, District of Columbia and Florida.  He graduated from the University of Kent, England with a BA Law.
