Barbra Kavanaugh

The best part of being an interim is using all I have learned as a manager, director and executive to strengthen and guide an organization’s Board and staff through change, to emerge even stronger and more confident in their vision for the future.”

Barbra began her work as an interim executive after decades as a leader in both non-profit organizations and public office.  A respected advocate for the use of interims during leadership transitions, Barbra has served as an interim CEO and COO for local, national, and international non-profit organizations and associations.

After graduating from SUNY at Buffalo law school, Barbra worked as a legal services attorney, served on the Buffalo City Council and managed the regional office of the New York State Attorney General. Eventually, she and her wife moved to Washington DC where Barbra served as the executive director of a workers’ rights advocacy center. While in DC, Barbra learned about the need for professional and principled interim leadership for non-profit organizations experiencing transition. She was a co-founder of the Interim Executive Network in Washington DC and served as the IEN’s director for almost 10 years.

During her years of working as an interim executive, and with the Interim Executive Network, Barbra believes that interims strengthen not only the organizations they work with, but the non-profit sector overall.
