Steve Mutty

With over thirty-five years of experience in nonprofit and business leadership in the greater Washington DC area, Steve Mutty has served as CEO of nonprofits with local, regional, national and global reach. His nonprofit experience spans a wide range of impact areas including advocacy for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, land conservation and environmental stewardship, historic preservation, advocacy and mentorship for at-risk youth, and serving people and strengthening communities through volunteerism.

Steve has served 501(c)(3) nonprofits with 5 to 35 employees and annual budgets from $500K to $3.5M. Combining business and nonprofit leadership acumen, he specializes in change management, program development, strategic planning, board relations, and public engagement with extensive experience in crisis and reputation management. 

Steve was responsible for the establishment of Best Buddies Capital Region, serving young people with IDD through one-to-one friendships, where he served for eight years as Chairman of the Board. He was also a volunteer mentor at the Endependence Center of Northern Virginia, which helps develop independent living skills for persons with disabilities.

Steve has extensive experience in sales, marketing, public engagement, and development. He has served on the events and fundraising committees of several major national nonprofits and raised over $10M as a volunteer fundraiser before transitioning to his current career as a nonprofit CEO. He has an outstanding record of success in new donor cultivation, restoring lost donors and retaining loyal donors. 

Steve has served on the Board of Directors of several public-private partnerships addressing regional transportation issues and promoting business growth in Northern Virginia. He served for three years on the Alexandria Waterfront Commission and fifteen years on the Board of the DC Building Industry Association Community Services Corporation, which oversaw volunteer community improvement projects in underserved neighborhoods in the District of Columbia.

Fostering a culture of service to neighbors and communities, especially those who are marginalized or underserved, has been a passion for Steve. He was named to the 2020 Census Complete Count Committee for Fairfax County. While serving as Executive Director of one of the largest non-government volunteer organizations on the East coast, Steve founded and chaired the Fairfax Task Force on Disability Inclusion in Volunteering and assembled leaders from government, business, academia, and advocacy organizations to unlock new opportunities for persons with disabilities to serve their community through purposeful volunteer activities. 

In 2021-2022, Steve served on the Global Affiliate Assembly of Points of Light, advising POL senior leadership on engagement strategies to strengthen its global network. He was named to the Executive Committee of the Assembly in 2022.

With degrees in Hospitality and Culinary Arts, Steve is an accomplished chef and food and wine enthusiast. He has apprenticed and fundraised with many chefs in the greater Washington DC area. In addition to his lifelong work in support of persons with disabilities, Steve is a dog rescue advocate, intrepid traveler, and a collector of nautical books and memorabilia.
