Steve Kohler is an experienced health care executive and consultant with over 30 years of experience. He specializes in working with non-profit organizations primarily in the human services sector. Over the course of his career, he has held the positions of Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer along with numerous other positions in human services.
As Chief Executive Officer of a provider of children’s residential and community-based services Steve led the provider from a financial crisis to profitability in two years after taking the leadership position on an interim basis which then transitioned to a permanent position. Carefully evaluating and restructuring staffing throughout the agency led to greater efficiencies and overall productivity of staff.
As Interim Chief Financial Officer for a residential and community-based provider Steve worked closely with his team to improve overall revenue cycle functions. By reducing the time to invoice by 50 percent, cash flow improvements impacted the agencies’ overall financial performance. By introducing improved follow-up and collection methodologies days in accounts receivable were significantly reduced. Additionally, Steve led the evaluation, selection and early stages of implementation of new documentation and billing software for the agency.
Additional significant interim positions held include Interim Chief Financial Officer with a community-based provider in Texas with over $100 million in revenues. Currently he is serving as Interim Director of Finance for a provider of Intellectual Developmental Disabilities, Drug and Alcohol and Mental Health Services with over $250 million in revenues. In addition, he has held the positions of Interim Chief Operating Officer and Interim Director of Revenue Cycle for organizations with revenues in excess of $100 million.
As a consultant Steve has led numerous engagements with human services organizations across the country. These engagements have focused on but were not limited to operational efficiencies, regulatory compliance, billing and reimbursement issues that impact the organization’s bottom line. Steve has presented on a state and national level on a variety of topics that impact human service providers. Working closely with the National Council for Mental Wellbeing he along with a team presented on the operational and financial impacts of becoming a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic.
