Mike Gifford has been a leading force in the fight to achieve better health outcomes and eliminate racial health care disparities throughout this career as a trusted consultant and a successful executive leader in the nonprofit sector.
As a national leader on innovative organizational models and service delivery to patients not well served by our country’s health system, Mike has provided in-depth consulting and technical assistance to HIV, aging, community health centers, and sickle-cell amenia organizations in more than 30 states. Mike has successfully consulted on and led more than 25 nonprofit mergers during his career resulting in stronger organizations providing greater services, reaching more people, and achieving better outcomes. He provides executive partnership with Chief Executive Officers and Boards of Directors on leadership development, strategy, operations, policy, and other executive issues. He is a regular guest lecturer at universities across the country, serves on several boards of directors, and regularly engages policy makers at the highest levels of government on health care and social justice issues.
During his tenure as President & Chief Executive Officer of Vivent Health Mike led its transformation from a social service agency into the nation’s premier HIV health care provider that uniquely addresses social determinants of health. Known as a health care leader who applies the best principles of for-profit management and leadership to the non-profit sector, Gifford grew Vivent Health from a $2 million to a $264 million organization and from serving one city in a single state to now serving 18 cities in seven states. The results of these efforts were a record number of people cared for and the finest clinical outcomes in the country – including dramatically reducing and in some locations eliminating racial disparities in health outcomes.
Mike received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and International Relations from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.
