John Gatto is an experienced nonprofit and social service executive with a career built on leading mission-driven teams that respond to some of society’s most complex issues. He has learned that teams are most successful when leaders build environments that are inclusive, leverage the strengths of all team members, practice effective communication, and are guided by a clear vision. As a collaborative leader, he has a proven record of responsibly stewarding resources, engaging diverse constituents, and creating sustainable change.
As a social worker, John began his career advocating for children and families within the child welfare system. After leading foster care and adoption programs, he co-founded Hope Adoption, Inc., an organization dedicated to advancing a more compassionate and open approach to adoption. The organization worked to center the voices, choices, and dignity of those most directly affected by the adoption process. To expand and sustain that mission, it later merged with a larger agency, extending the reach and impact of its work.
Since then, John’s career has centered on advancing health equity and addressing the social determinants of health that perpetuate disparities. His work has spanned substance use, HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ+ health, homelessness, community violence, sexual exploitation, and workforce development. Guided by a deep commitment to social justice, he led an organization that established the state’s first legal naloxone distribution program — a groundbreaking initiative that later became a model for a statewide pilot.
John has served as Executive Director of two HIV service organizations, leading with a commitment to sustaining vital care through periods of significant change. As HIV funding declined, he brought three organizations together in a strategic merger that strengthened efficiency, preserved essential programs, and created a more resilient organization. Most recently, he served as Senior Vice President of Community Health at Justice Resource Institute (JRI), one of Massachusetts’ largest social service providers.
John’s leadership approach has been shaped by the breadth of roles he has held — from clinician and middle manager to Executive Director, board member, and board chair. This experience has given him a unique perspective on leadership at every level and across every stage of an organization’s lifecycle. He has guided organizations through start-up, strategic growth, executive transitions, mergers, and downsizing, leading with clarity, collaboration, and a steadfast focus on mission and long-term sustainability.
In addition to leading organizations, John has provided technical assistance and consulting to public health and social service agencies in strategic planning, team building, change management, staff development, board development, and governance. While at JRI, he partnered with the state to build and facilitate Ending the HIV Epidemic, a broad community coalition that brought together health and social service providers, government leaders, people living with HIV, clergy, caregivers, and other committed community members. The coalition continues to unite diverse voices and develop timely, responsive public health strategies as new community needs emerge.
John believes that successful leadership seeks to balance the priorities of results, relationships, and process in service of the mission. As a leader, he does so with compassion, thoughtful analysis, and inclusivity.
