Jane Hirschi is an experienced nonprofit leader with more than two decades in an Executive Director role. She is skilled in board and staff relations; leading organizations through transition; strengthening boards by helping them identify their strengths and growth areas; and balancing strategic vision with the nuts-and-bolts management of small to mid-size organizations.

She is the founding director of CitySprouts, an outdoor science education program serving students and teachers in public elementary schools in the Boston area. She grew the organization from a volunteer project to a nationally-recognized non-profit with a full-time staff of 12 and an organizational budget of $1.1 million generated from diverse sources including school district contracts, grants, and major gifts. In 2022, she worked closely with her board and staff to make a successful transition from the organization’s founding executive director to new leadership.

Jane brings her wealth of leadership experience to her role as interim leader, helping nonprofit nonprofit boards and staff build organizational capacity and lay the groundwork for new leadership. As an interim executive director, her approach is grounded in an acknowledgement of systemic inequities at the cultural, interpersonal and personal levels; she strives to listen to and learn from all voices.

She is the author of two books on the topic of outdoor learning: Ripe for Change (2015, Harvard Education Press) and We Garden Together (Workman Publishing, 2023). She has served on numerous boards and steering committees. Recognition of her work includes the 2022 Cambridge Chamber of Commerce Inspire Award, Massachusetts Horticultural Society 2016 Silver Medal Award, and numerous keynote addresses. She was selected as Social Innovator by the Social Innovation Forum in 2008. Jane holds a B.A. and an MA in Communication Studies from the University of Maine.
