David is a seasoned leader in the social sector, skilled in management and consulting. He has effectively developed and revitalized organizations by strengthening systems and structure, evaluating and improving program outcomes, engaging boards and coaching staff, employing and modeling best practices of relationship management.

David provides counsel and strategic direction to nonprofit organizations—as a trusted advisor and leader—to help them attain their goals, increase impact, and achieve their highest potential.
David provides interim executive management, as the primary service of the practice, tailored to the specific needs of an organization, based on strength of board and staff leadership, organizational sustainability, evaluated risk, and mission alignment. Other consulting services include: transition planning and guidance, strategic restructuring and merger integration, planning, organizational assessments, and board development.

During the past 13 years, David has served as interim executive and consultant for more than a dozen nonprofit organizations with a broad range of social services, including: youth development programs, family shelters, schools, behavioral health, social service referral and disaster relief, volunteer and nonprofit support, community housing, elder care and domestic violence.

David also has a record of success in guiding strategic realignments, turnarounds, and providing leadership to board and staff during complex transitions. He has led several organizations through a comprehensive process of evaluating and implementing strategic options from partnerships to mergers. While serving as interim executive director, he guides board and staff through essential collaborative processes that effect change and facilitate understanding and acceptance.

David previously served as President of the National MS Society, Northern California, where he transformed and fully integrated the Northern California Chapter, following a merger of three chapters. Prior to that, David held leadership positions for the American Red Cross, serving as executive director of the Sierra Nevada Chapter and chief operating officer for the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter where he directed the integration of seven chapters into one, while overseeing operations and working with leadership from each county.

David also had a distinguished tenure with Netzel Associates, Inc., where he provided counsel and training to nonprofit organizations and institutions in donor-centered, needs-based fundraising practices, board development, campaign management and strategic planning. As a result, David excels at connecting donors and organizations to achieve successful outcomes. He guides organizations through strategic fund development, engaging staff and board and helping organizations increase their capacity to attract resources.

David has extensive involvement as a volunteer with many nonprofit organizations, in direct service and governance roles. He has led national and statewide fundraising campaigns, served as vice chair for the California State Executives Association and on a national strategic marketing campaign committee.
David is formally trained in interim executive management, with emphasis on leadership protocols and tools for providing strategic transitional leadership. He is a founding member of BAIED, a recognized network of professional interim executives in the San Francisco Bay area, with a mobilized peer network for support and assistance.

David earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from the University of California, Berkeley, a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management from the University of San Francisco, and he studied economics at the University of London.
