Mark Allan has a strong record of executive leadership and achievement in management, consulting, and education regarding mission driven nonprofit organizations. He was CEO of a series of four nonprofit community-based health, behavioral health, and social service organizations over a period of 18 years. All of them had faced substantial challenges, and in each case he significantly expanded the organization, and improved dramatically their financial and operational performance. He is adept at working with Boards and governmental and private funders, and has played a leadership role in relevant trade associations. He knows how to effectively motivate and lead staff, while also holding them accountable.
Most recently he completed four years as Vice President for Psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance, a nonprofit integrated safety net healthcare system, expanding the scale of its operation and service to the community, while dramatically improving its financial and service delivery performance. He built and ran a $500M statewide Medicaid health plan for Boston Medical Center, contracting for services with community health centers and other nonprofit healthcare providers, and leading rapid growth and strong financial performance.
Mark redesigned, led and grew tenfold the health sector MBA program at Boston University on the faculty of the Questrom School of Business. He developed the curriculum, established strong industry relationships, designed key courses, and created an international case competition. He held positions on the national trade associations and accreditation organizations, and oversaw the accreditation process. He developed and led successful executive education programs for physicians and other leaders.
Mark designed and developed a university wide health institute at Boston University as Executive Director, working with administrative and academic leadership across the university. He provided management support in the Department of Family Medicine as a faculty member of the Boston University School of Medicine. He was also the founding Executive Director of a health institute at the Indian School of Business in Chandigarh, India, living in India for two years. He worked on Gates Foundation funded health system redesign in Uttar Pradesh, a state of 240 million, and was one of 13 participants, and the only non-Indian, on the Government of India Task Force on Primary Care Redesign.
Mark brings together a deep set of skills and experiences operating in complex environments, successfully integrating vision, leadership, strategy, interpersonal relations, finances and the drive to create successful on the ground implementation.
He has also acted as a consultant to many organizations, providing assistance in strategic planning, financial and operational improvement, system development, and government relations. Mark has an MBA in Health Sector and Nonprofit Management from Boston University, an MSW from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BA from Columbia College of Columbia University.
