Jamie Bearse is a nonprofit CEO and executive with 22 years of experience transforming organizations into extraordinary success stories. He’s an executive coach, a nonprofit consulting business leader, and an interim executive. He believes synthesizing organizational culture, clear and concise strategy, and empowering community involvement are critical for nonprofit success.
As CEO of ZERO Prostate Cancer, Jamie grew the organization into a national patient-powerhouse where his leadership resulted in a remarkable 500 percent increase in fundraising and programmatic capacity over a decade. Over that time, the organization earned the NonProfit Times 50 Best Places to Work a record nine times while consistently receiving top marks from watch-dog group, Charity Navigator.
While at ZERO, his accomplishments included pioneering a new $200M multi-organizational business model for patient relief, spearheading the creation of the largest men’s health event series in the U.S., and uniting the prostate cancer cause through building a centralized chapter system while leading the acquisition of key organizations in the space.
His efforts at ZERO led to a $30M increase in annual federal research funding by expanding the reach of the organization’s annual Summit, instituting a volunteer affinity program, and serving as a member of the executive committee of the Defense Health Research Consortium. The increases in federal funding resulted in seven new treatments and a biomarker.
Currently, Jamie is the principal of a consulting firm, Build a Better NonProfit, where he coaches over two-dozen nonprofit CEOs and executive directors, facilitates nonprofit leadership support groups, and helps his clients develop organizational effectiveness, strategic plans, and great board governance and participation. His mentees and clients have budgets that range to less than million dollars to over $100M and specialize in a variety of backgrounds including healthcare, human services, conservation efforts, public benefit, veterans’ affairs, and more. His peer-leadership across the nonprofit sector includes regular speaking engagements and he serves on the advisory board of NonProfit Pro where he writes a monthly column.
Prior to his career in the nonprofit sector, Jamie served as the press secretary for Congressman Stephen Lynch (Boston) during his inaugural campaign and on Capitol Hill as well as writing for several news organizations. He has taken coursework in nonprofit executive education at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, has a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and an A.A. from Cape Cod Community College. Jamie lives outside of Boston, MA with his wife and family.
